I'm pretty sure you can't buy a registration number if it's been issued previously no matter if it's no longer in use. Although the number plates were on the IJ Minis in the film, they had in fact never been officially issued, hence DVLA offered them for auction.

dvla say

Is it possible to buy a registration that used to be on a vehicle before, even if the vehicle no longer exists?

Unfortunately we do not resurrect old registrations for sale, even though they may no longer be on vehicles. Should this situation change full details will appear on our website.

Just buy documents from an old scrapped mini and re-register yours as that one.

you can buy old registrations if someone offers you it for sale. Companies such as regtransfers sell them on behalf of people.

These Links explain how to get an old registration number back if a classic vehicle still exists but missed out being put on the DVLA computer records:-

That may well save you £90 a year or whatever but when you come to sell your car it will be worthless, as everyone will see it's a ringer!!!

Look I know you're only a youngster, but what you are advocating is against the law.

If you were to do this to a car and were stopped either by VOSA or an eagle eyed policeman, then there is every chance your car could be taken from you and crushed.

Have a look around and there are plenty of threads about this.

I do believe there are instances of DVLA looking at cars advertised on fleabay and if the vendor can not prove that the vehicle on the V5 matches the car being sold, then the car is taken and crushed.

So regardless of what you plan to to tell the buyer, it may never matter.

Whilst it may seem to fairly common-place it is still a criminal act.

I understand what you say, but really, to a VOSA or DVLA inspector, a modified 80's Mini would not look alot different to a modified 70's Mini in their eyes.

I havent done it (and not thinkin about doing it...MUCH) just seems like an easy thing to get away with to be honest!!
