Has the car only just started doing this? If so it could be down to a leaking float bowl valve or a stuck jet - or even a faulty waxstat jet. All cheap to repair but a bit more info needed on the engine and carb and problem please - pictures might help.

We need to know what carb it is. If it's an SU HS type (with the float bown on the side) it has a little pipe at the bottom of it going up to two nuts, you screw the bottom one anticlockwise from above to weaken the mixture - but this may not be the long term answer -

Are you sure you've got an appropriate needle in it? If the inlet and exhaust manifolds and systems are standard it should be an AAC, (check in Haynes).
You could colourtune, or use a CO exhaust gas meter to check if it's much to rich.
Oooor, run it for a few miles, and check the spark plug colour.
Dark and sooty, too rich.
pale tan - about right
white - too lean.
