I've a 1981 Auto Austin Mini 1000, the gearbox is a 4spd auto, but I have read that the rover mini autos have a 5spd box. Can I change my 4 spd box for a 5spd box, or is it better to change the engine and box together ???

No.... ALL mini autos are 4 speed...

The only difference between the old Type 1 and newer Type 2 gearboxes is the later ones have a PARK, still 4 forward and 1 reverse gears.
