Hi all,

I am at a ongoing restoration of my Mk1 Cooper S 1071cc for which I would like to have an 8 port engine built. It will be a BRG circuit racer look a like (H65)

Now the questions:

- I have a Mowog 8 port head fully reconditioned by Avonbar Racing and ready to go.
- 2 Weber 40 which I think wont fit under the bonnet, so maybe I have to go the Amal route - need advice here.
- What would work best? Use the original 1071 block and keep it according to the car? or wil the head demand for a bigger capacity block? - I need advice here too.

I have been told that small bores and 8 port are very disapointing on the torque. Amals can be a pain to tune and also provide dificult start up because ther is no choke. Fuel injection costs a fortune.

What would you recomend me to do. Please advise the right engine builder to do a good job within reasonable costs.

I appreciate any advice.

Kind regards,

Rui

im building an 8 port 12 valve 998 and i cant see there being a problem with not having huge torque, i just want to make a high reving engine. if i were you i would go bigger capacity for best results, the only reason im going small is to prove a point to be honest.

i would think that your 40's are going to be huge on a 1071 too, have you considered going to newer bike carbs, im also going down this route, i would love amals, but as you say no choke is never a good thing for starting!

You have 70mm bores with the S engine overboring a 1071 would be a crime!
can not say about bike carbs but Bill Richards in kent would be better at what would work on that head you have, amals cost a bomb as well but a kugelfischer pump of a puegoet or BMW will fit and work that engine.

hi,

Thanks for the reply.

For now the only option I have that actually fit under the round nose bonnet are a set of four Kawasaki carbs. They are Keihins, I think 32mm choke.

I believe 1071cc with this head could make a very interesting engine, lots of revs. But i really would like to keep all the setup period to go well with the car.

Is there anyone around that has done this kind of setup? I basically need some benchmarking.

Will post some photos of the head soon.

Regards,

I've previously done some ringing around and research about 8/7 ports on a short stroker. Im sure there have been more, but there are two significant cars that can help you on your research. One was an old 999cc racer from back in the day, built by arden. It was based on a bored out 970 engine from memory i think it peaked at 115bhp at around 9000rpm or somewhere close. Magazine articles can be found on the 'mk1 performance conversions' website. The other car you should look up was a 1071 8-port built by bill richards, i'm not sure exactly when it was done, but its not an oldie or anythin. That one was on amals and made 135 bhp i think?

What you say about torque is right, but a short stroker is never going to have the torque of a long stroker. The 8 port will be better than the 7 port at helping the situation due to the better inlets, but it will never be great. If its something your set on doing, and considering you have the parts, i would, speak to people who have good experiance with the 8 port, people like Bill Richards and MED and speak to Swifty too, i dont know what he's like on 8-ports but he used to do a lot of 7-ports as-well as formula junior racers (which have 1071 based engines)

Thank Jetblick for your input.

I've read about that 999 8 port mini you refer too. I have a 970 S mk1 and for once though I could go that route, but I don't really think I will get my hands on a Tecallamit Jackson Mechanical Injection ou a Lucas one. The are far too rare and expensive when available.

Rui

I reckon I'd go for a 1340 (not the common 1330 engines), so you've got a destroked larger bore engine that's still a top revver!

As for carb setup, I think the Webers would be awesome, but there are loads of bike carbs that would probably be a good option, maybe even go for TB's of something like a Gixxer 600 or something? Then go for mappable ignition and injection. I guess it depends on how 'historic' you want to be really.

Hi,

I have bought a 7 port head from ken elder in australia and want to ensure that i do not have to modify the bonnet to make it fit. Did you manage to install the bike carbies(keihins) and have them fit under the bonnet whilst using air filters? If so, how so and do you have any advice/pictures ?

Thanks
Paul
