Hi folks,

Yet another possibly stupid question..... (im new to this)

Can i straight swap a 1996 mini cooper instrument cluster into a 1991 998cc?

I want to go for the three clock fascia and a walnut dash in stead of the lonely looking standard set, so ive obtained a 1996 mini cooper cluster and im praying it will fit and read accurately.

Ive been told that it might be a problem due to the diff ratio.....
Anything else i should know?
I take it the rev counter and fuel/water temp clocks will be easy enough.

Hopefully one or more of you lovely people will have the answer.

Help a newbie transform a set of black face dials into a spanking set of nice white ones.

As ever, thanks in advance.

I guarantee you won't need to change the differential :shifty:

The clocks will go straight in, you will already have the two wires tucked away necessary for the rev counter. I'd imagine the speedo reading will be about right (when are Minis ever spot on anyway) but you could always change the speedo drive gear if it bothers you.

When I first get a new car, I stick my satnav in the window and see how accurate the speedo is, if it's near enough, that ok.

Hey,

I swapped my mini city 2 clock dials for a 3 clock pod out of a 2000 MPI, if u are using a dashboard u will have to saw off about a inch, of the indacator barrels ( very easy ) once thats done srew the speedo pods to the dash, then thats it fitted.

Right the chances are that the speedo will be wrong, so you will have to get them re-calibrated, but u might be lucky. on the dials u currently have what speed do they go up to? (im guessing 90mph) and what speed do the 3 clock pods go up to? if there both 90mph u can just swap the speedos round and then it will be correct.

the fuel and water will be fine, but the rev-counter will read double e.g 1000rpm realtime the rev counter will read 2000rpm

Cheers

James

Thats the kind of nes i like..... im going for the three clock walnut dash and the white/magnolia clocks are just the dogs hazels when mounted in there.

Seen loads of photos of finished ones and they look so good.

Thanks for your reply

Folks,
I need to make a correction.... my mini is a mini city and not a flame as i thought...

So, im wondering if i can still swap the clocks as mentioned without having to change the diff.

Thanks again and sorry to ask twice!!

Are the clocks from an SPi or MPi cooper ?

Im not sure, but the speedo has a maximum of 110 mph

Its actually in kmh and has a maximum of 180 kmh...

The reason i want to swap this over is because the car im hoping to swap them into is going to ireland and they use km as the speed units there.

Is there a huge difference?

can be.... firstly you may have problems getting the tacho to work with a non ecu driven ignition if it's MPi sourced clocks... secondly your speedo may read slightly incorrectly as the TPM of MPi clocks differs from those used on both SPi Cooper and other minis...

Your best option is to install it, and see what happens...
