i would say you need a new ignition barel. try turning the key so the lights come on on the dash and take the key out if they stay on that will most likely be whats wrong.

also when you take the key out does the steering lock come on? just try turning the steering wheel with the key out

From your description it sounds like its running on quite badly, get your mini on a rolling road and they should be able to sort the problem for you...

You can tell the difference between running on and faulty electrics by what other ignition dependent bits do, leave your indicators on if turning the key kills them but not the engine it probably is running on. Check your tail pipe 'n plugs for signs of it running lean. A clean air filter element, new plugs and a check for intake air leaks may help.

Lean? I thought running rich made engines run on, due to excess fuel build up. Slightly worrying will have to gas test mine today.

Please describe "how" the engine is behaving when it refuses to stop. Is it running like a normal idle... or is it very lumpy and does it shake the car and put out obnoxious fumes?

when i turn it off it runs very lumpy and car shakes and judders, but dosent kick out many fumes, its as if the bottom end of the engines is still trying to go but top end dosent, very wierd a friend of mine said to check coil timming, but ive never herd of this before, has anyone else if so how do i go about sorting it ?

jak.

It does sound like it's running on. Burning fuel with excess oxygen (lean) leads to higher temperatures, leading to hotspots in the combustion chamber that can ignite the fuel without a spark from the plugs. Your ignition won't be involved in running on, it's turned off. But, having it overly advanced will also make for higher temperatures that can cause it. Start with the servicing points I mentioned above.

As Ethel said, it sounds like run-on or dieseling. Start with a basic tune up. If that fails to address the problem you can dig deeper OR get in the habit of stalling the engine as you switch off the ignition. Above all... you don't want the engine dieseling as it is not good for the bearings.

To stall the engine (get in the habit of doing this every time you stop the car) place the car in 3rd or 4th gear, set the parking brake, and place your foot on the brake pedal. Simultaneously as you turn off the ignition key, ease your foot off the clutch. The engine will stall smoothly and not have the chance to start running-on.

mine passed the mot with this problem.
my carb was running rich before but my mechanic had set the carb up better scince then but it still dosent like to turn off, its not every time if ihave been on a longish journey then its more likely to carry on running on when turned off.

If its the Italian Job in your pick it sounds like the anti run valve has become disconnected. Check the breather pipes and electrical connections. It sits on the top of the sevro mount. I had a 1275 Cooper on a carb with same problem.
