ive just bought a mini clubman with high lft cams in it, not sure what it does to the engine. the guy who i got the car from said that after 2500rpm it increases the power. it does seem to sound louder after 2500rpm but it idles over 1500rpm when stationary, he said its because of the cams.if the revs fell below 1500rpm, the engine would turn off. can i adjust it in anyway so that it idles lower?

it wouldnt turn off. Depending on the cam, a high lifting cam can cause lumpy idle.

He might set it at 1500rpm so that its smooth/constant, rather than lumpy.

yea thats true, he said not to drive the car at low revs, i.e if i was doin 30mph, it would be better to keep it in 3rd gear

I cant see why he would say that? Maybe im missing something?

Surely driving in 3rd gear, might mean the car is "on cam" so to speak. Driving around the 2.5k rpm range, so if you plant your foot it would shoot off. In 4th you'd be driving off cam, so it would take a little to build up the revs before the power range of the cam came in?

Doesnt mean u shouldnt or cant drive it at 30mph in 4th.

Like i said, maybe im missing something, but i would drive it how i normally would, then adjust my driving to what i find gets me a decent drive out of the engine.

yea suppose it does need a little build up in 4th at 30mph. im not mechanical minded so i have no idea how most of the engine components work lol.

il try drive it around for a while and see what its like.

thanks

also my gearstick is very loose and it hard to get it into gears sometimes but it doesnt crunch, it wouldnt be the gearbox would it?

I dont think he means dont let it rev bellow 1500 , all he his saying is the cam works at its best with high rpm and wouldent perform very well at lower rev range.

He probably means you need to pull away at higher revs than you would in a standard car.
