I used POR 15 rust preventitive paint on my rear subframe, but im going to paint the front one with it as well. I was very impressed, it looks a very good coating it is like an enamel finish. i applied 2 coats by brush and that used half the tin! But you have to use a spoon or something to take the paint out of the tin or it bugrs up the tin. Have a lok at my project there is pictires of it in one of the last posts. Sprite Rebuild

I was extremely disappointed with the results from using POR15. The subframes on our woody estate were done with POR15, using a spray gun.

Earlier this year, when the car went in for its MOT, i had a good look underneath and was shocked to find rust on the rear subframe. Basically, the paint on the rear subframe had come off in quite large areas, so i took to it with a wire brush, and it all came off..... No way would hammerite have come off that easily with a wire brush, so thats what the subframe has been recoated with....

Used it before, good stuff, BUT YOU MUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER!!!!!! Sorry to shout!!, but its VERY important that you do. If you don't, don't expect it to work!! Its a "paint system" and should only be used with other por15 products. If you need to thin it use por15 thinners, not normal thinners, I know its a lot more expensive but if you want it to work right don't cut corners, you're just wasting you're time and money. Preperation should also be as per instuctions even brand new metal should be prepped with por15 metal ready stuff. I know people who have used it in the past and like most men think "they know it all", treat it like normal paint and just blast on and do it their own way only for the paint to flake off a few weeks later and then say "that por15 paint, sh*te that is"!! Basically just take your time, order all the stuff you'll need for the job from Frosts(in the link above, if in doubt ask their advice and tell them what you want to use it for) i.e metal ready, thinners, tie coat primer, paint etc. read and follow the instuctions without cutting any corners to save time or money and you should be ok. Oh, and its VERY sticky so follow the health and safety advice too.

If you get paint into the rim of the can, the lid will stick on and not come off. The label on mine says to put cling film between the lid and can, which I did. I'll let you know in a fortnight if it worked. Plus you're not supposed to pour unused paint back into the can.

I painted the rear subframe which took less than 1/2 litre; the front would be about the same.

Ok well i got the subframe back from the sandblasters today and its been blasted and primed, so i was thinking;

key the primer paint down using 400grit
marine clean it
spray on the metal ready
2-3 coats of POR-15, apply each coat once finger drag dry
then
once the last coat of POR-15 is finger drag dry.. start with the POR-15 chassis coat black and go over with a few coats, is this the right thing to do? i don't want to mess this up!
