hi, im martin and i have a 1988 mini city e, 998cc.
it has recently developed a problem that is causing my mini stall and spit loads, when i start my car any time of the day it starts straight away but then the idle speed drops to about 300rpm and my rev counter flickers and drops while it is misfiring, and eventually it stalls itself.
also when i drive it it will jump and splutter, any time ,when you least expect it. it has blown a couple of condensors while doing this.
i do have a blow in my exhaust and didnt no if that played a big part in it.
recently i have replaced my;
spark plugs
HT leads
distributer cap
rotor arm
points and condensor
none of this has cured the problem. any feedback will be fantastic.

Does it have a stage 1 kit? Also whats the air filter like, when was the last time it was replaced? could possibly do with a tune up.

hi,
it doesnt have a stage 1 kit.
my air filter was replaced earlier today (as the old one was really bad) and it has made no difference to the running of it.
thanks

May not be directly related to our fault but have you considered a compression test as if the gasket has gine between two cylinders it will not indicate the normal indications.
As for points and condencer going and replacing, there has been a batch of condencers of late that have fouled up which myself and also a local garage somerford mini have found so if you have replaced the condencer more than the points its worth while replacing them both when one goes.

hi Bradley,
i will get a compression test done tomorrow and then post to say what happens. as for the points and condensers, thats good, as i have bought 1 from a different manufacturer and it hasnt blown since.
thanks

I should imagine it would be the condencer to be honest.
Also if it fouls up between today and the time you next post it could be soething else.
Please post you compression test figures in psi
easier , also if you leave it a few mement inbetween the cranking this will allow the battery to recoupe a little.
Await you resonce tomorrow.

hi Bradley,
just changed my condencer to see if it made any difference and it still runs with popping and banging between idle speed and about 2700rpm, after that though its fine, untill i change gear and the revs drop again.
no problem i will post the results in psi
thanks

Okey doki,
Await the results but it sounds ignition... Perhaps a good old set of ignition testers ( set of 4) they go inline to the HT lead and sparking plug they allow you to see visibly what is exactly going on in the system..
Have you removed the contact breakers to inspect? if the condenser has gone its is most probible that the contacts have pitted so would be worth wile changing them also.

very sorry for the late reply,
compression test turned out perfect, but i found out what it was
it was my screw holding my points on didnt have a washer on and it was catching on my automatic advance.
thanks for all your help though
