Some of you may have seen my post in the "introduce yourself" area but for those of you that haven't I have recently dragged my Mini out from the hedge where it has sat for the last four years!

About My Mini

P91 AVK was bought new by myself from Harvest Motor Co in Darlington in June of '97. I took the train up from deepest darkest Essex and drove back in my first ever new car, an Amaranth Mini Cooper Sportspack. It was used every day for a few years until at about 30K miles or so I had to rebuild the engine. Mpi tuning was still somewhat lacking at the time so I restricted the rebuild to a Swiftune 1293 with modded head, K&N, LCB & Exhaust plus an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Brakes were changed for Metro turbo calipers with vented discs. Suspension was Hi-Lo's all round with Spax shocks. Both subframes were replaced, (the front due to a small knock I had which knocked the geometory right out) and fitted with solid mounts on the front and uprated rubbers to the rear. I briefly fitted a Spax coilover kit but could not get on with it so it was sold on along with a set of 13" Superlites to my mate Joe, (Mini13 off here!) The car remained in daily use until it hit 48K miles, at which point the steering rack let go. I removed the rack but never got round to replacing it, and after a house move a few months later most of the bits went missing so it has sat round the back of my house ever since.

I currently use a Volvo 850 T5 as a daily driver and have been finding its ability to drink petrol somewhat tiresome, therefore I decided to get the Mini back on the road, thinking that it wont need much more than a little bit of TLC to get it back up to speed again. A quick search on e-bay soon sourced a Sportspack rack so come the weekend I dragged the Mini out of its resting place, dragged literally as the rear brakes were seized solid! I decided to strip out the interior as it was in need of a decent clean, what I found i was NOT prepared for. I knew it was a bit raggedy in places but was not prepared for how far it had gone  Once the carpets were out the full extent could be seen.

After removing from undergrowth and a quick wash.

Hole through inner and outer sill and floorpan. Is worse than looks in this photo.

After eventually getting into the boot I found a lake where the spare wheel sat, a bit of prodding & a few more holes showed up.

Rot around the rear subframe mounts.

All this means that it's not going to be the quick-fix-and-MOT that I hoped for. It deserves better than to be plated over just to get it through so the decision has been made to do it properly. I'm going to strip it to a shell and replace all the panels it requires. I've always fancied a Mini with a different engine and so having had an MG ZR160 I reckon it would be perfect.

So, it looks like I'm going to be around this forum for quite some time... :D

I never intended to leave it for so long, it just kinda happened...
At the moment I can see it needs a complete boot floor, inner and out drivers side sill plus some floorpan. Inner and outer passenger sill. Drivers a-panel, scuttle panel, wings & front panel. Bootlid also has some rot but might be salvageable.
Defo keeping the colour, I love it!!!

The man is a savage I agree. Chuffed to see you getting this going again Paul, it breaks my heart to see it sat round the back of your house! It goes without saying that I am ready to help out whenever, I think I owe you to be honest!

Easy, leave it in a hedge...

To be fair, I did live about 50yards from the sea. When I had the front end repaired at less than 2 years old, it had already started to rot around the screen. The passenger a-panel wasn't that far behind it and both doors were replaced under warranty around the same time. I'm not saying I didnt help it along slightly by neglecting it but its always been a bit of a pig.

Worse things happen at sea.
Have you considered buying a new shell?

You got to remember it's still 11 years old! More and more Sportspacks will soon be looking like this as they begin the whole Mini midlife crisis of turning to dust!
Atleast you're going to rebuild it, sure it'll be better than ever once it's done! Nice car too by the way!

Thanks for the positive reponse fella!

This car aint that bad when compared to what others are like, with a bit of time spent on it it will be mint again! I think people are too quick to suggest a reshell. Restoring this one will mean another shell saved from the scrappie and as we all know Mini's are becoming a rare sight on the roads these days so that can only be a good thing.

Ive yet to decide where I'm going to carry out the work. I would prefer to do it in the garage but I have a couple of other project sin there that need to be sorted first. I am considering putting up a kinda of lean-to down the side of the house to keep the rain off. Also looked at the spit-thing on e-bay from Mk2mania, anyone bought one?

Thanks mate, I love the colour too. I feel really bad about letting it get into this state, If i had realised it was this bad I would have done something about it.

I have some pictures of the day I bought it and drove it home, I will need to scan them in.

The plans for rebuild are afoot, I have my eye on a couple of salvage MG ZR160's that will donate their engines to the cause, Muhahahaha!
