There should be a ID tag on a flat bit just behind where the alternator is/would be.

The 12A means a 1275cc (post 1990).
Is there nothing nelse after the 12A? eg:

12A/2A (Carb type)
12A/2B (Carb and Catalyst)
12A/2D (SPi (throttle body injection))

Sorry not sure apart from the 12A part.
MOWOG as mentioned above did parts for A series engines (there is a MOWOG inlet manifold on ebay now) not sure if they did the full engines .

EDIT:
Just seen this

MOWOG means "MOris WOlseley Garages" and it's on almost anything of the engine as 'they' made all the engines & stuff.

12A497 is a number on the back of the block and - and as far as I know refers to a 'smal-block' engine.

WMC237588 - don't know...

What is the head's cast number?
(Take off the rocker cover)

12A 497 is not the engine number, it is the block casting number of the commonised A series small bore block - most likely to be a 998 (could be a 998 Cooper but probably isn't) or 1098 engine and if it has an 1100 tag on the back then 1098 unless someone has changed the internals.
