I've just been changing my final drive, and and now ready to re fit the diff housing. When I took it off there were no gaskets on it, just some silicone sealer. I've read this is normal and that later cars did not use gaskets here. Should I just refit it using sealer? Would there be any benefits or pitfalls in using gaskets?

Just use RTV. The casing was bored with the diff cover assembled,a gasket will alter the clearances if one wasn't fitted when the boring was done.

Ok thanks. I have a tube of Hylomar Blue, is that suitable for the job?

correct - diff housing gaskets wernt used on the later boxes (gaskets on the side plates have always been used. When I took it off there were no gaskets on it, just some silicone sealer. I've read this is normal and that later cars did not use gaskets here
Yep RTV sealer should do the trick - i hate hylomar - its expensive and *rubbish*!Should I just refit it using sealer?
No benefits, pitfalls would be that the bearing tunnel (where the diffbearing sits) wont be round or the correct diameters can result in spun bearing or cracked case.Would there be any benefits or pitfalls in using gaskets?
If you are building a decent box, then the tunnels should be checked with a bore gauge and re-sized...
