aye up folks, i want to paint the transfer casing and clutch cover on an engine that's in bits at the momment. Now the parrts are in the usual condition with a bit of oxidising and grease here and there. So what i'm wanting to know is;

After i've degreased the casing how do i go about cleaning the oxidisation off?

Will engine laquer take to aluminium or will i need some primer?

Will i need to key the surface at all?

On a seperate note, is any primer needed on the cast iron engine block before the engine laquer is applied?

any help on this would be much appreciated because i'm stuck now =]

Drop "Icklemini" a PM, I was looking at one of his engines the other week and the painted finish on the aluminim parts was great, looked like they had been vapour blasted and ploished but it was actually painted!!!

I'd clean it up with aluminium cleaner, and then go over it with a fine wire brush. Make sure it's spotless, and etch prime it. You will then be able to paint it with the enamel with no problems.

cheers for the help so far guys, which aluminium cleaner would you recommend peter? Is there any certain brand that's better than the rest? Also I think it comes in different grades doesn't it? Which grade do i need?

I just use the stuff at work that we get from a van that comes round, it's about 5:1 ratio I think, pretty strong stuff.
