Hi,

Just purchased a alarm system for my 93 carb mini, and it comes with Remote start.
Im geting it fitted next saturday, but i was wondering if the remote start would work ok?? My mini starts well, and the only time i need the choke is first thing in the morning, so i was thinking of leaving the choke out slightly when i park it up at night to solve that problem....would that work?!?

Cheers!! Steve

I suppose in theory it would work, but would work better on an injection mini and iirc if its parked on a road, remote starting is technicaly illegal because your not in control of the car, also i think some of the remote start kits need a handbrake sensor, gear sensor and a clutch sensor (so that is see's your not in gear, your handbrake is on, and your not attempting to drive off with it in remote start mode). When you start, dont you need a little bit of throttle or is it just mine that only starts when i give it a bit extra fuel?

not on your drive no, its private land, but on the road it is illegal, also think about how you would explain it to your insurance company "i turned on my remote start unfortunatly it was in gear, and ran straight across the road and caused a accident." they wouldnt be too hapy :P anyways if its on your drive, why not open the door start it, and go back inside the house, would be a cheaper method imo.

but then the keys are in it which means the steering lock is off and the door is unlocked, so anyone can just jump in and nick your car with the keys

as far as i know once the car goes out of range of the keyfob the remote kit recognises the owner isnt driving the car and turns the engine off

I don't think remote start will work as your Mini has a carb.

The alarm would need to have a little mechanical hand that pops out and pulls the choke knob to start it from cold. :P

You see TopGear last night?
Hammond got into a bit of trouble! wasn't remote start but keyless ignition, his car got nicked by the clarksonator!
(depends on the range i suppose but if the range is big enough for someone to drive it onto a trailer then be careful!)
Also as you chase after them with your keys in your pocket, they can drive away!
A friend of my dad's used to have remote ignition on his shogun, 3.5V6 Petrol!
He used to start it up when people walk past it in sainsbury's car park!
Was hilarious!
If you can do it, then why not! You can show off at shows then!

I would be extremely impressed if a remote start managed to start a car while it was in gear!

The topgear was keyless ignition, not remote start, on most remote start setups if you try and drive off be pressing the clutch or releasing the handbrake, it turns off, also remote start works with the doors locked and steering lock in place so less risk of someone trying to steal it. I agree if you can remote start, then do it, its bloody usefull on cold mornings (i do similar with my corsa, i start it then lock it with the spare key and pop back inside for a cup of coffee :P )
