Draining An Engine

Hi, I ned to drain all of the water from my system to replace the water. I have drained the rad through the plug at the botom but am unsure where the plug is to drain the remainder of the system.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

That should have done the job well enough. There's a drain plug on the back of the block by the clutch, don't unscrew the one on the oil pickup passage by accident!

As I have apparently used corrosive antifreeze, I need to thoroughly wash the system through. Is the plug at the rear of the block (I have seen one at the front near the engine steady which may be the oil one you are referring to)?

There should be a pipe plug on the back of the block near the exhaust for cylinder #4. However, you're likely to find it very securely rusted in place. If you are able to remove it, expect to have to run a wire or similar into the opening to dislodge the rust that will be there. However, if you've already drained the radiator, there isn't likely going to be any anti-freeze to come out when you remove the plug.

I doubt your anti-freeze itself was to blame for anything. Over time the cast iron is going to rust. If you're going to be flushing the block out to clean away the rust and scale, don't forget to (reverse) flush the heater core to get the scale and debris out of it as well.

Think only A-series had drain plugs and they were not carried over into A+ !

That may indeed be so. I didn't think about that. However, Minuel's avatar/profile says he owns a 1972 850.

My A+ doesnt have one, looked for it when i was removing rad and such but found there wasnt one there

When i come to reasembling the engine back into the mini i plan on simply putting a hose into the stat housing (without the stat in) and turning on the hose for a few minutes to remove any rusty water

Typing that out makes me think it might be better to do it with engine out of the car still as i wudnt like to put rusty water over clean engine bay :-
