Mini 25 1984

the oil seal in the gearbox where the selector rod from the rod change connects is leaking oil, can this be changed without removing the engine ??
if so how is it done, will i need access to a pit or a car ramp.

any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,

No it's not an engine out job.

1. Just get the car in ramps or axle stands.
2. Drain engine oil.
3. Obtain pin punch set (can't remember the correct size) as this will speed the process greatly.
4. Put the car in 1st or 3rd and knock the roll pin out - the pin that is closest to the gearbox.
5. Remove the rod change link and then the oil seal (use a small flat screwdriver)
6. Fit the anti-leak seal kit from Minispares. Anything else is a waste of time.

LINKY.

7. Fit rod change again.

Hope that helps.

Matt.

On rod change gearboxes, the selector seal is prone to short life. This is because the gearbox casing does not support the rod particularly well, allowing it to move radially. There is a low cost ugrade available to solve the problem, DSN Classics part number GBX3199.
When replacing the rod seal, remove all the existing seals (there are sometimes more than one pressed in over each other).
Lightly oil the support bush/O-ring and insert it into the bore.
Lighty oil the replacement seal (GBX3005) and evenly press it into the bore.
As an added protection, a bellows is available (standard on some cars) to reduce the amount of dirt getting on the selector rod. (DSN Classics part number GBX3012)

Additional information:
We also offer a punch suitable for removal/replacement of the roll pin which attaches the gearchange rod to the selector rod. DSN Classics part number TLS3006.

Note- you may need to give the pin some serious stick to get it out. For the Haynes "medium hammer" read "biggest hammer you can get your hands on"!!

The only problem thats gonna take your time is punching out the pin in the rod, everything else is straightforward.

Heres my own topic link, hopefully it'll help, just make sure that rod is held SOLID. Jam something in there basically.

Do make sure that there is not an alloy support bush already fitted - ramming another one in won't work!

No and a mate of mine had a hell of a job getting it back out when he stuffed another one in there on his Mini.
