Firstly from what you describe I would stop driving it, it doesn't sound safe.
Not really sure what you mean by slips on the steering ?? but the grinding could possibly be wheel bearings, or even really badly worn brake pads / shoes. Not sure if 85's were disks or drums.
Do you mean when you turn the steering wheel, the road wheels don't move ??
That could be all sorts from steering wheel loose, tighten big nut in middle. Loose clamp near floor where it attaches to the steering rack.
Worn steering rack, worn track rod ends...ball joint problems.

On the steering firstly check all nuts and bolts are tight, including the big one that holds steering wheel on.
track rod ends may need replacing
Worst case scenerio worn steering rack.
Grinding shouldn't be anything do with steering. could be stone guards on discs have broke loose, not uncommon.
Who fitted bearings, could be a bad batch or badly fitted, not enough grease ??
long shot are wheelnuts tight
