Hi everyone,

Can anyone tell me how i can easily tell an A Series engine from an A+ ?

Ive bought this mini, it has the 12G940 head on it as per the castings on the head itself, but im not sure of the block. The former owner isnt much help on the spec either, just that hes sure its a "1380 mate with a weber".

Am i correct in thinking that the engine number should be where the head meets the block on the right hand side (just above the temp sender) as it isnt there.
The car is HPI clear so it aint a ringer, but im looking at buying a replacement dizzy from a member of this forum so i need to be sure before i waste my money.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

If a+ easy way to tell is that the block casting is ribbed at the front where a series are not, also on a+ engines the alternator bracket is next to the middle core plug.

The alternator bracket is about 3/4 away from the middle core plug. Does this mean that i have an A Series?

Why would you need to change your engine number? Have you worn it out or something?

Anyway, the River Thames is closer to you than any water channel near you engine number so you can drill or grind the drive rivets off with impunity.

Not so much a thread but like an inverse rifling... the are hammered in rather than screwed and this allows them to grip the block.

Minimail can supply an engine number tag with the reverse stamping like an original and they also have the correct drive rivets as well.

You could try and cut a slot in the top of your exiting rivets and screw them out or destroy the engine tag and you should be able to get a decent plair of pliers or similar on them and screw them out. If you break them off they are difficult to drill out unless you have decent equipment.

Cheers Retro - What makes you so sure? Would that be a metro or an MG Metro?

Thanks again

As far as i know 12HC wasn't ever used on minis. I don't know whether it's an MG or not.

I'd suggest checking the Engine FAQ section.. as it has a list of engine codes.. you should find your pre-fix there. :D

The engine FAQ doesn't have the right prefix, closest is 12HC01 not 12HC1L. If that's right it's an A+ Metro engine.

Yeah... so regardless of what comes after the C,... the C itself indicates it's of metro origin....
