What Engine Do I Have?

Can anyone tell me how i can easily tell an A Series engine from an A+ ?
Ive bought this mini, it has the 12G940 head on it as per the castings on the head itself, but im not sure of the block. The former owner isnt much help on the spec either, just that hes sure its a "1380 mate with a weber".
Am i correct in thinking that the engine number should be where the head meets the block on the right hand side (just above the temp sender) as it isnt there.
The car is HPI clear so it aint a ringer, but im looking at buying a replacement dizzy from a member of this forum so i need to be sure before i waste my money.
Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

The alternator bracket is about 3/4 away from the middle core plug. Does this mean that i have an A Series?

Anyway, the River Thames is closer to you than any water channel near you engine number so you can drill or grind the drive rivets off with impunity.

Why would you need to change your engine number? Have you worn it out or something?

cheers for the reply, the enigne number has pretty much worn away, u cant really see the numbers onit, u can pretty much match it up with the logbook, so its ok id just rather have a new one on here
ok so its ok to drill them out, n where abouts can i get new rivets?? also i heard that the rivets has a thread on them so they can be screwed out?? any ideas

You could try and cut a slot in the top of your exiting rivets and screw them out or destroy the engine tag and you should be able to get a decent plair of pliers or similar on them and screw them out. If you break them off they are difficult to drill out unless you have decent equipment.

I'm pretty sure it used to be in a metro.....
Cheers Retro - What makes you so sure? Would that be a metro or an MG Metro?
Thanks again

I'd suggest checking the Engine FAQ section.. as it has a list of engine codes.. you should find your pre-fix there.
