hi thanks in advance
here is my problem just put a new engine in my car and have had to change the starter motor
(flywheel different to before). so I have change to a separate start solenoid given it a good earth.
when I turn the key all I get is a click, so I rechecked the earth replaced the earth in the boot, and still just click
so thinking it was a bad battery I got my other car with some jump leads and still click.
but if I put power straight to the starter from a spare battery it turns over lovely and starts first time.
it is driving my mad and my wife doesn't like starting it with jump leads and a battery please help :) :dontgetit: (I did try and fine a face that was crying couldn't find one)

Well you know the starter works you've said so.

So sounds like a solenoid problem

You should have a red/brown wire it would have had a large spade connector on it, when you turn the ignition key to start is this wire becoming live.
This is the wire that energises the solenoid, it should be connected to the small spade connector on the solenoid.

The solenoid contact could be HR.

If you disconnect it from the starter, then measure the voltage on the I/P and O/P it would tell you (it should be the same both sides with the key turned to the starting position i.e. <12v)

hi
dont know if this will help but i had a similar problem with my min ,and it turned out to be a bad connection to the starter relay,on the left hand side if the engine bay in a holder on inner wing .I just removed and refitted it and all was well . I have had older minis with the starter solenoid on the inner wing but i dont remember if they were fitted with this relay .Just thought ! What i Do remember is that the old inner wing solenoid had to have a very good earth to the body to enable it to work correctly .

good luck

hi thanks did as you said and found no power or intermittent power going to the start. so went today and bought another start solenoid and it started first time great.
then after a couple of times it stopped and went back to clicking.
can you burn solenoids out or is it some thing else cheers

have a check and make sure the battery and starter leads are on the right terminals of the solinoid ,
do you know what is making the clicking sound - solinoid or relay ??
