G’day all,

My buzz box is finally back on the road, and so now I am hunting around for comprehensive insurance. Nearly every company I’ve tried has knocked me back due to the fact that I don’t have a lock-up garage, and that my car is parked on the street in front of my (rented) house.

I’ve tried the following companies:

Shannon’s
Lumley Special Vehicles
Just Car
Moran
Marsh
Ryno

I’ve deliberately left the mainstream insurance companies off the list due to the fact that they don’t seem to insure any kinds of older vehicles at all.

Does anyone have any advice for me at all here? I’m running out of options, and want to protect my investment, so any help would really be most appreciated!

Thanks for your time!

I'm with Shannon's, but then my cars are garaged.

I've heard of another classic car outfit called Torque. You might as well look them up and give them a call.

Thanks for the lead, but it looks as though they are underwritten by Lumley, which means no go for me. Any other ideas at all?

Next step, try an insurance broker.

But seriously, the last thing I'd leave out on the street is a '68 Cooper S !

I reckon you should move house. Get a place with a garage or if you're stuck where you are, do a door knock and see if you can rent a garage from a neighbour.

I've used Shannons in the past, and their demands never seemed over the top. The reason companies won't give you comprehensive insurance for the car being parked on the street is that they believe the risk of it being stolen is unacceptably high. I'd say you either need to find somewhere more secure, or you might need to take out third party insurance — in which case you won't be covered if the car is stolen or if you have an accident where you are at fault.
