hi all
im currently in the process of converting my 998 city e into a 1275
i bought an spi engine which im converting back to carb my problem at the moment is that the temp gauge on the 998 is on the head below thermostat on the spi its below the injection system and there isnt even a blanked off hole on the 12g940 head to fit this sensor is there an easier way round other than drilling and tapping the head for the temp sensor
if this is the only way any ideas what size the tpi is
also will my 998 distributor work ok in the 1275
thanks

On my SPI I fitted a tee piece in the heater hose. it is alloy from demon tweeks, and takes the standard sender unit. but to be honest I am not sure it works too well as the temp gauge never gets up to normal.
You may be able to use the thermostat housing sandwich plate with the threaded hole and matched two wire sender (look on minispares) depends on what clocks you have.
I have seen an article somewhere on the way to drill and tap the head, I think it was Keith Calver, or the mini speedpro tuning book, This is the best solution. I would have done mine but got a 1380 engine ready to go in.
As for the distributor the advance curve will probably be wrong for the 1275. you can either use a MG metro/carb cooper distributor, or if you are planning mods buy a 123 or aldon or go down the megajolt route.

It's 5/8unf, wouldn't be hard to get the head drilled if it's off.

I drilled and tapped my Thermostat housing. It works a treat and does not foul the thermostat. I tried to put some pics up but for some reason i can put any on.

Under the text entry box it will tell you how much spare space you have for attachments and let you upload your photos. You can link pics already on the web (e.g. photobucket) with the insert image button above the text entry box.

cheers guys thats a great help iv got a pillar drill and and should have a 5/8ths tap and die set so it shouldnt be too difficult doing the thermostate sandwich plate seems like an easier bet tho and less risky ill have to look into it. the connection wire is only a single wire with a blade type connector and i dont quite understand what minispares mean by the two vacuum pipes connected to the sensor
thanks again for help
