or relay pack

'93 MPi coop

during a trip the indicators went down, turned off checked the fuses all ok... tried to restart nada , zilch, nowt.
engine cranks ok and I could smell fuel after a while.

no lights though... oil or batt.

during the tow home I turned on the ignition and after a few mins they came on, but a bit dimmer.. then off when I tried to crank it.
recent activity..oil filter, oil, air filter, head steady poly bush

thinks.. could this be simply a battery/connection/fuse issue? immobiliser beeps and lets me crank ok

thanks minimat
I had to remove the earth straps for the head steady bush replacement... so I'll check that out first..as you say could be a poor contact

still no lights

OK I've checked and made good the earth straps, I have continuity from the engine block to the body.
battery was showing 12.04 Volts, so I've put it on charge

If I turn the key to ign the fuel pump comes on and the engine turns over on the starter

all the fuses in the box are ok

No ignition light could be a couple of things, the alternator is disconnected or FUBAR'd

or

the bulb has failed on the dash

I say this because if the fuel pump and ECU are operating, there WILL be 12v onto the ignition warning light. Check all your wiring at the alternator.

EDIT, what year car is this, the 95 onwards cars have a 24 way fusebox under the bonnet, the covers are usualy missing and I have had to replace every fuse due to corossion. It could be that the car is just suffering the weather with corrosion on the electrical contacts, check and clean every fuse and its holder

you need to now check for fuel and a spark, this is easy on an spi (yours is a spi not an mpi if it is a 93) take the airbox off and you will see the injector under the yellow cap in the center, get an assistant to crank the engine over while you watch
for fuel spraying on the throttle flap underneath.
If this is good it must be a lack of a spark, take a plug out and lay it on an earth with the ht lead connected (alernator or engine block) and watch for a spark while an assistant spins engine over,if no spark suspect either coil or its connectors, dizzy cap or arm i had one that had the same prob and was showing a spark but it was not powerful enough to ignite fuel, new coil sorted it.

OK found it....

previous owner sydrome.

I had checked the fuses and line fuses first.
found the fuses OK
but didn't spot the newly added blade type line fuse on .. fuse 7 (ign)___w_____[7]------[7]___w____
the original fuse and line was still there and visible!

Anyway... the new circuit had a broken wire and blown fuse... replaced blade fuse and new connector fitted

she fired up...

wonder why it was fitted?

Thanks to all esp minimat for helping eliminate the red herrings

one more hansome car back on the road!

Prob new wiring just bypasses the old one as the in line fuses are very unreliable and lose contact easily,i had no end of problems with mine and in the end cut them all out and replaced them with a universal blade type fuse box, i suggest you do the same it will make the car more reliable in the long run.
Glad you got it sorted,as i said earlier look at the simple things first before worrying about expensive ecu's etc!
