I've removed the column, and noticed that the spline is missing a fairly large chunk.
Haynes mentions that it should have a groove in it for the locking screw at the bottom of the column, but this doesn't seem to be in the right place... and it doesn't look much like a groove either!
Am I looking at needing a new steering rack?
Cheers.

well it looks fine to me that is where the bolt goes through the universal joint and locks it on to the steering rack

Really? Hmmm... but surely the bolt should end up much lower down - it's at the very bottom of the steering column. If it was supposed to fit into that chunk, the column would only be half on.

Nothing wrong with that. In fact the splines look in quite good order compared to some.

Blimey! Well, that's great (and unexpected) news. Means I can just put the column back on tonight.
I suppose I just have to make sure that the bolt at the bottom of the column matches the groove's position.
Thanks all!

Drop the column back on then get a drift or screwdriver to find the notch in the spline, then fit the bolt. The column doesn't sit all the way onto the splines, it sits up a few cm's.
