Help :( - Engine Tries To Start But Won't Run

Please give your topic a title that quickly describes your problem. Just putting 'Help my Mini doesn't work' is useless to anyone trying to help.

Model:mini rover city e 1000
Year:1990
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):Wont start...the battery is fully charged and new, it turns over and runs for literally 1 second and cuts out, its got about half a tank of fuel. im not really mechanically minded and my dad wont get off his bum to help
i just feel a pillock when everyone comes out to have a look whats going on and i try to look like i know what im doing hahaha:D:D:D

it might be
theres a strong smell of petrol which only lasts for a few minuets but i cant no leaks :S

You may have just flooded it, let it stand (since it's now 1am, I guess you may have done that bit :lol:).

What year is the car? If it has ballasted ignition you may not have a constant supply to the coil. Without turning the engine over, see if you have a spark when you remove a spade connector from the coil when the points are closed (with the ignition on, obviously). Or tap the coil's supply (+ve) wire on an earth 'n see if it sparks.
