Hi there,

Im currently building up a 1275 road engine. The engine is an A+ Series 12H. Im getting to the stage when Im needing to get parts together.

Ive heard that a Metro Turbo cam will fit into this engine and is the next step up from stage one like goodies. Is that true?

This sounds like what I need as the engine MUST be reliable as I have to do nearing 60 miles a day.

Any help would be brill.... Does anyone know of one for sale if this will work.

Thanks.

Better off going to a straight MG Metro cam rather than the Turbo, apparently. That is the route I am going down....

From memory the non-turbo cam has better lift.

Yes, the 1275 metro and the mg metro turbo cams are the same.

The cam provides more then enough valve lift and stays open long enough to make useable power.

Someone will tell you to put a sw5 in at some point most probably.

So let’s compare the mg metro cam and the swift tune sw5 cam.

The sw5 cam has 7.14mm of lobe lift.
The MG metro cam has 6.67 mm of lobe lift. (More then enough)

The sw5 cam has 244 degree of cam rotation on both the inlet and exhaust.
The MG metro cam has 252 on the inlet and 268 on the exhaust. (Much more bite!).

The sw5 cam doesn’t open for very long so little air can get in or out, to counter this they have decided to recommend the use of 1.5:1 ratio rockers, this in turn opens the valve more to let more air and fuel in but also wears the cam out more because of the higher pressure applied back to the rockers from the valve springs and then back down the push rods and ultimately onto the cam.

You may mention that the cam shaft seems more lairy then the SW5 cam. However the mg metro cam although in a performance model is as tame as a kitten because it was designed for people to use every day in traffic and so on. You could even go as far as to say that it was designed to be granny friendly yet have the bite there if you wanted to do a bit of spirited driving.

I hope that helped.

A direct MG metro repoduction is available from Kent Cams its the 500.

sounds like you dont like the sw5?? - have you measured one to see why they work so well with the 'oh so tame' duration figures?

The sw5 cam doesn’t open for very long so little air can get in or out, to counter this they have decided to recommend the use of 1.5:1 ratio rockers,

Um - the 1.5s are optional, certainly works very well without them...

but also wears the cam out more because of the higher pressure applied back to the rockers from the valve springs and then back down the push rods and ultimately onto the cam.

does depend on springs used..
Not saying it hasnt happened... but i havent heard of a worn out SW5

I don’t like it not one bit, worst 130 pounds I’ve spent, i thought bugger it and went to the other end of the spectrum and brought a what i thought was a 286 as that’s what i told, but when i picked it up it was a 296sp, ill never go back to a "tame" cam, I’m building a 1380 with a bp320 ill see how it goes.

After 2000 miles flat spots had already started to become apparent on the sw5, this head was a boggo standard mg metro 940, i thought it was quite strange as they are supposably made out of billet.
