I was always told you should prime the engine after an oil change or if its been stood for a while.

Evidently the best way was to remove the main lead from the coil, turn the engine over for 20 secs to allow the oil to work round the engine, refit the lead and start normally.

Anyone do this?

Take the plugs out & it will turn faster.

If your oil pressure light works make sure this goes out before you start it up for real

maybe not but the engine is still a 50 year (almost) design so it would probably help it alot in the long run to prime it

Yeah your right >_< start it unless it's been sitting for 30 years. It's another story though if it's never had oil before or if the oil has been drained out of the engine and left for a while

Make sure you pre-engage (fill with oil) the oil filter, wont need to fill the filter 1st when you fire the engine up, just start it up as normal, dont rev it, just let it idle for a few mins.

Thanks guys! I always pre-fill the filter so will just fire it up and let it run at idle.

Cheers

Run the engine till the oil light goes out, once its out turn the engine back off and let the oil drain back down into the sump.Dip the oil and top up if needs be and jobs a goodun.

I wouldn't bother with an oil change but if a car has stood for a few months it's as easy a way to pump some fuel through and check the plugs are sparking also.
