Because my mini never seems to warm up more than just above the blue bit on the guage I have removed the thermostat from its housing and tested it - it opens up slightly fairly quickly but other than that it seems to work in a pan of boiling water - it certainly is closing. The rubber seals around the housing seemed to have deteriorated, will I have to get new ones before I replace the housing? I don't want to destroy my car!

Yes you need to fit new paper or cork gaskets, otherwise you'll get cooling spewing out.

Where would I find this sealant - I have a really bad record with regards to stopping things leaking (the heater cable pipes are still leaking but only slightly...)

Just buy yourself a new gasket. They only cost pennies and much easier than making your own. Probably worth getting a few so you have a couple of spares for future use.

Just pop into local motor factors and ask for gasket sealent, they should know what you mean, best to get the proper gaskets and when I used them I still had coolent leaking out so had to use the sealent aswell, with anti-freeze it will leak out every tiny hole it can find as its thinner than water.

Yes, it goes from right at the bottom to just above the blue area when driving for 5 minutes or so. I realise it is pretty cold but this has been the case since I got the mini in October.

Yes a new gasket from Somerford costs pennies and if you're worried about leaks, buy the cork type as it's nice and thick and won't allow a drop of coolant to leak once done up nice and tight.

Why do people insist on using sealant.... it was never used when the car was manufactured, and if the surfaces are clean and free of previous gaskets you should not need it again.... If they are not, then clean them...

Yes sealant is just a bodge.
