Some one confirm for me please:

If I take the distributer out and spin the shaft round 180 degrees, it will work right?

Static time; TDC at fly (using a mirror)

Rotor arm facing South West instead of at number 1 spark plug.

Get back to me asap please!

Thanks, Tom

You will need to rotate the distributor drive on the cam as well as the distributor its self.

Have you checked that it is actually 180 out before you do this? Do you know what stroke #1 is on? The fly marking at TDC is TDC for both #1 and #4 remember and you need to make sure you are timing it to the right cylinder.

If you do have to turn the dizzy drive spindle around by 180 then you will need to remove the distributor (and its base on an A series engine) and thread a 5/16 UNF screw or bolt into the end of the spindle so that you can get hold of it. Then withdraw it, turn it 180 and put it back. Haynes has a diagram to show you how it should be timed.

Like Dan said, the TDC mark applies to both cylinders #1 and #4.

To confirm what's really going on, remove the valve cover. Do not move turn the engine from what you are showing in your pictures. With the TDC mark as you have it now, look at the rocker arms for cylinder #1 (radiator end). IF you can grab and wiggle them, #1 is on its firing stroke and your dizzy is 180 degrees out. If you cannot wiggle the rocker arms for cylinder #1 (they are down and compressing the valve springs) then what you are looking at is #4 at TDC on its firing stroke (and you don't need to change anything).
