Fit them so it holds the cylinder to the back plate:
so: <cylinder><backplate><clip this way around: ) >
this then holds the cylider tight against the backplate.
i know that mate! but the clip is concave so can go on 2 ways around, not sure whick way it should go!

on mine, i put the clips with the middle of the 'cave' pushing against the backplate, with the two 'ends' of the clip on the cylinder side if that makes sense?
i would get you a photograph but am living in birmingham during term time, nowhere near my mini

cylinder - backplate - clip ')' way around.
or another way is have the clip ( way around - backplate - cylinder
so that the middle of the clip is away from the backplate..

In the end I bought a box of circlips and fitted one of those instead. At least then I could us my circlip pliers and and fitted it in about 3 seconds.

If you think of the clip as a saucer fit it so the bottom of it against the backplate, when fitted the outer rim will sit away from the backplate.
think that makes sense! do all 3 ridges end up in the recess of the cylinder?

Yes, either get one end in an lever the other over or put both ends in and squeeze it down with gas pliers or similar. Both ways need 3 hands
