I’ve just had an Engine & Gearbox (Metro A+) rebuild to stage 4 by Minispeed and am putting on all the external bits before putting the engine back into the car.
The problem is somewhere along the line I’ve lost the original Speedo Drive Spindle!!!
Apart from the amount of teeth are there different fitting types??
I’ve taken one out an old engine I have (It looks the same from what I can remember) but its not sliding in as smoothly as it goes in and out of the old one, I realise there will be wear on the old one but how tight should it be??
I can not push it in by hand any further and it still has an inch left to go in, a friend said that’s normal and knock it in with a hammer!!! Should I do that??
Regards,
Ben

Getting the right speedo drive for you gearbox is important...
Use this to find out what you need... based on your speedo TPM, Final Drive and Wheel size...

Hi,
I’d already checked it’s the correct ‘Speedo Drive’ but thanks for the link. I’d already seen it in the FAQ section, some good stuff you have in there.
The question is more about fitting and how tight the spindle should be?
There are no burs on the spindle and unless someone has hit the other end! (Fresh recondition gearbox) that I very much doubt and can not tell unless I look inside the gearbox! (I was hoping to avoid that)
Once it’s ‘located’ should I be able to push it in by hand or will I need to knock it in with a hammer?

give the shaft a clean with a scotch brite ( or washing up scrubber ) then try again....
and no, it should slide in easily...
Is the plastic pinion installed, if it is, take it out before you put the worm drive in.

Figured it out!!!
Took casing off and spindle still would not go through case!
On closer examination it looks like when they disassembled the casing was knocked off with a hammer from the inside and had burred over the end so filed it out.
Thanks for your help
