If the noise comes on when you depress the clutch then you should suspect the clutch release bearing. If the noise goes off when you depress the clutch then suspect idler gears or gearbox bearings. idler gear noise will be there all the time when you are driving, if the noise goes off in 4th gear it is probably a gearbox bearing. Hope this helps and if someone has already replied with similar, Sorry I am slow typist
thanks tommy,
the noise stops when clutch pedal depressed, the sound gradually stops....is this gear box bearings or worse?
noise is there in 2,3,4 gears whilst driving
cheers

After a whine, comes a bang, and that the idler gear letting go and time for a complete strip of engine and box.

When the idler starts to go it's first a rumble, then changes to a rattle, then a whine... when you get to the whine stage, it's likely that both the transfer case and gearbox case will need replacing..
After a whine, comes a bang, and that the idler gear letting go and time for a complete strip of engine and box.
thanks for this, I think!!
so it should not be driven until sorted....this means engine out and replace these bits....no other solution?
do I need any special knowledge to fix this....I live in France so mini specialists are a little scarce.
any idea what sort of cost am I looking at for the parts, best economic way!
cheers

Yours will be a clutch release bearing I reckon.Mine only rattles in neutral, but the noise goes when I press the clutch.
There's no noise whilst driving.
Shouldn't worry about it too much. Don't sit with the cluch depressed at lights or rest your foot on whilst driving.

i only get a low rumbling noise when in 4th gear only and then it s not every time, its fine in 1st, 2nd, 3rd. am i looking at a gearbox strip down and replace worn bearings or do you think its more serious
or could it be differentials????
Thanks

if it was the diff it is less serious but it would be in all gears.
engine out time and full rebuild over winter.

My Mayfair had a rumble but I left it alone. Then it suddenly started sounding like it had straight-cut drops. I didn't check the shimming of the idler gear when I changed the gearbox. When I split the hosing apart the idler gear looked like this:
There were also bits of teeth everywhere. Incredibly the engine was ok. It's probably a good idea to check things.
