our mini has recently developed a cold start running problem. it's generally missing/ running on three cylinders. it works better as it gradually warms up but until then it only really picks up with near full throttle

we fitted the engine from an '89 metro along with the electronic ignition so no points. i'd guess no condesor either but not sure?

i know about loose/faulty leads, dodgy spark plugs, broken/ cracked dizzy cap. i suppose it'll have a rotor arm which could have worn? distributor hasn't been moved recently

anyone got any ideas what else it could be? thanks for any help guys

Sounds more like fuelling and choke setting issues.

Get some carb cleaner, remove the dash pot and give it a good clean. Rplace it then top up the dash pot with oil.

After this you can change the settings of the choke, I think the Haynes says how.

And have a look at the air filter. Could also be a compression problem on one of cylinders

I just bought a Metro for its engine and driving it back it would only get to motorway speeds if going downhill - after several frustrating miles, I stopped and took the air filter out - ta da problem solved - now goes like the clappers (well for a Metro anyway)

And have a look at the air filter. Could also be a compression problem on one of cylinders

Until all the rubbish going into the engine knackers it out, then you get a big bang.
Maybe a better option would have been to fit a new air filter - they are service items anyway!

I'd start by looking at dizzy cap and rotor arm, you sure you've not got damp in there, check them leads too, and make sure plugs have their tops screwed on tight, and properly gapped.

Check dash pot oil, you'd be surprised how much it solves! Do you know which cylinder it's missing? same one all the time? if so swap some plugs and leads round to see if it moves - actually could take plugs out and look for the sooty/wet one!
Also check compressions on the cylinders
