Hi. Just got my '79 mini and the key does not turn in the ignition (it is supposed to be the right key). This leaves me with numerous obstacles including:

1. How do I start the car? (I have tried hot-wiring it, battery might be a bit flat since it did not work. Also, can I do great damage if I get the wires crossed?)

2. How do I unlock the steering wheel?

3. Do I buy a new ignition or can I get a new key made?

Please help if you can ;) Thanks!!

try wiggling the steering left to right when turning the key.

That was going to be my first suggestion also.

In case you're not familiar with what we're talking about, the steering column lock can be very hard to release if the wheel is putting any pressure on it (like if you turned the steering wheel and are parked on a hill). While rocking the steering wheel back and forth, gently try turning the ignition key. This typically releases the pressure and allows the key to turn in the lock.

Try dropping a tiny spot of 3in1 oil into the lock barrel to lubricate it.

Or some graphite powder if you have some handy?

Not happening. Managed to hot-wire eventually. I'll just drill the ignition bolts off the steering column and get a new one.

Thnx anyways
