can anyone tell me exactly what the throttle postion sensor does on a spi cooper and what problems you will have if its not working,

i think it tells the ecu what position the throttle is at and changes the CO mixture.it might cause it to run a bit lumpy but i am not sure.
do u think yours is not working

the throttle position sensor or tps should tell the ecu of the postition of the throttle... simple... but its also to do with the timing aswell i think.. cnt remember if its to do with the spi not havin a vacumn advance on the dizzy ... hhmmmm

The exhaust gas sensor usually adjusts the fuel/air ratio at steady speed but as it's on the wrong side of the engine it also needs the TPS to tell it to adjust when you accelerate - the exhaust sensor wouldn't know until after you've stuffed the engine full of lots more air.
If the TPS is faulty the car would be slower and rough under acceleration

It could be a temperature sensor, giving the wrong mixture/timing
