hi there,

I just got pulled over by the police earlier on in the night only to find that both rear lights and brake lights are gone along with the rear fog light. Also my dash light has stopped working. I've checked all of the bulbs and they are all fine... The wierd thing is all of the other lights work, Reverse lights, indicators, front half, dipped and main beam.

The only problem is i dont have a fuse box... i just have these wires and various (new style) fuses hanging about the place under the bonnet.

Any ideas?

Normally this problem is caused by dirty connections on the fuse box, so I'd say you've got some sort of problem with the fuses. It makes it harder to help you if someone has been messing around with the wiring and removed the fuse box, but I suggest you check the condition of the fuses to start with.

the tail lights and interior lights are the same fuse in a standard fusebox, doubt yours is much different, so find the fuse and replace.

If it fails again you may have to investigate more.

I think they've put the tail lights and interior lights on the same fuse so you realise the tail lights aren't working!

Not so much the same fuse, which is true, but the side lights, tail lights and instrument lights are all on the same circuit...which is permantly live.

but the brake lights are not.... brake lights are only ignition live

That's the bit that confused me, suspect either some creative wiring, or failure of tail lights has somehow led to failure of brake light, shared bulb and casing. Whole issue may be wiring on one rear light cluster causing both circuits to fail?

Is it possible it could be an earth at the back end? One of the bullet connectors? Or even 2 unrelated problems........
As a related thing, I have an issue with the same circuit (dash light/tail lights) which by a process of elimination (and a LOT of 35amp fuses.......) I have narrowed down to the dashboard part of the circuit (I took out the line fuse which runs to the tail lights and it still blew the fuse in the fuse box).
Anyone any idea where to look? I have an '88 City, 2 clock dash which I have pulled out. Its a damned PCB on the back of the dash!

Well your Mini would have been wired up with a fuse box like the one illustrated below. Plus you need to ensure your using the correct fuses, otherwise you could torch your wiring loom: -

Ignore the auxiliary cooling fan in-line fuse as your Mini model wouldn't have had one of those.

Oh and these are the fuse box wiring colours from top to bottom: -

4 Fuse box wiring colours: -

White - Green
Brown - Purple
Light Green/White - Light Green/Orange
Red - Red/Green
