Hi there people
Before i commit myself to purchasing one, i want to check that a Smiths Dual oil & water gauge will fit my Cooper S MPi ( X 2000) The Minispares Cat Ref is SIB130MG. I know the oil pressure side is straight forward enough but i want to use the Water temp side aswell to replace the standard temp gauge as there more accurate as a mechanical gauge, but im not sure weather the capillary fill fit inside the thermostat housing :w00t: Most sensors screw into the water gallery on the cylinder head but mine screws into a collar that sits on the bottom of the thermostat housing. Anyones help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
P.s Merry Christmas to all!

I think most capilary senders have a 5/8 18 UNF thread (Minis with sender in cyl-head have).
The MPI has a metric M12x1,5 thread.

Maybe you could ask an specialist to fit a different sender?
Or get an adaptor?

Another idea which springs to mind is an adaptor to fit to a hose, like this:

That's propably the easyest...

If you use an adapter it wouldn't want to be in the radiator hose as it'd only see anything approaching engine temp when the thermostat is open. The standard leccy sensor sticks in a fair bit anyway.

Once the thermostat opens you'll see the gauge operating normally but as Ethel said, before the thermostat opens the gauge will hardly move.

I don't know a source for the hose adapter. Motorcycles use things like that for add-on temperature gauges but they aren't likely to have one as large as you'd need for the Mini. The hose adapter by itself will not be enough. The dual gauge expansion bulb has to rest on a tapered seat. That profile is typically machined into the cylinder head on earlier A-series engines than yours. You should be able to add part TE5 from Mini Spares to allow you to use the dual gauge with a hose adapter as shown above.... if you find a hose adapter threaded 5/8 UNF.
