Model: 1275 (carb) Mini Sprite
Year: 1994

Hey all, my indicators + hazards failed the other day and after checking out the fuses etc (which all seem to be fine) and a bit of research on here, it's come to my conclusion that the flasher unit itself has failed. (You can hear a buzzing sound and clicking sound when trying to operate the indicators every now and again). However, upon prising apart the unit casing just to have a peek i've found it to be perfectly intact inside with no form of damage/burning etc. Is it just the case that the damage cannot be seen to the naked eye? i.e. something within the circuit board or the wiring etc. Should i be expecting to see something.

I'll order up a new unit later on, but just making sure because if it's not this, then i'll be jiggered if i can find out the real problem!

Lewis :)

did you check the inline fuse along the cable directly behind the air filter? the actual fuse holders often fail on the connections even if the fuse is ok.

Yeah, all checked. Fuses are fine and the connections/contacts are clean.

Electronic flashers are perfectly capable of failing without there being any signs of damage.

Argh! Just gone and got a new unit and the problem is still here!! :(

You can hear a faint infrequent clicking noise from the flasher unit when the indicators are engaged. Also if left for a while the interior light will illuminate once again, then when you select an either left or right indicator on the stalk, it no longer illuminates and goes out. Helpp plzzz!

Could it be the hazard warning light switch that is to blame here?

That overrides the indicators when in use, but it can also override them (prevent them from working), when it fails.

Try switching the hazard warning light switch on and off a few times, perhaps that will clean the contacts?

Also switch the hazard lights on and then the indicators at the same time. Then switch off the hazard lights. Sometimes that helps to reset things.

If you get no joy, try replacing the hazard warning light switch.

Mind you if the interior lamp is coming on, then I'd check there's no short in the wiring: -

These are taken from my original owner's handbook (1990 Mini Cooper), so it may not directly apply to your Mini.

But the later Haynes manual lists the in-line fuses for later models (like yours) like this: -

Later in-line fuse ratings: -

Line fuse (four-fuse block - later models)
Rating (amp)
15 .................................................. Right-hand side and tail lights
10 .................................................. Direction indicators/hazard flashers, interior light
15 .................................................. Dim-dip lighting
10 .................................................. Rear foglight

I don't know how accurate it is, but the 'direction indicators/hazard flasher, interior light' circuit obviously needs checking. Unfortunately the Haynes manual doesn't provide loom colours, but your original owner's handbook should?
