Have replaced the shagged 1275 engine on my 64 cooper replica with a 998 a+ and would like to fit a pair of refurbed twin su's I have, however they don't appear to physically fit between the head and the bulkhead without the right hand float chamber and possibly the jet fouling. Any ideas? Can I take off the spacer blocks between the carbs and manifolds?

Sounds like you have carbs and a manifold from an MG. Mini carb sets are angled differently from MG sets in order to clear the bulkhead. If this is the case you would need a new manifold and some new float chamber spacers for the SUs. The spacer is important, leave it there.

I'll look into that but was told when I bought them they had come off a 1275 mini racer. could a big hammer against the bulkhead have been used to make them fit?

Hi..You can use an ajustable engine steady and this will enable you to tilt engine forward slightly............. :)

That sounds a possibility as the bushes are really shagged on the top steady anyway. Don't suppose that helps!

A common mistake is to use the similar looking manifold off an MG-1100 or a Midget as Dan suggested. Yes, hammers to the bulkhead can make things fit but I assume if you're going to the trouble of fitting twin SUs to your replica that you'd rather do this the right way. Find a Mini manifold and buy the float bowl spacers Dan mentioned and you'll have the correct looking and fitting setup.

You'll have to move a lot of metal to do it by re-shaping. After you've got clearance for the float bowl and jet you'll have to get a lot more for any kind of air filter. Even with the proper manifold you have to use special offset filters. It could be that the racer they came from had a boxed out bulkhead. Have you a picture so we can be sure what's going on?

What size carbs are you trying to fit?

Original Cooper manifold castings are 12A309, 12A661, AEG 573.
