Model: Equinox spi
Year: 1996
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

I've read on another site that there is a fuel filter that is the same physical size as the mini one, but has flexible hose pipe connections rather than the screw thread on it so you don't have the problems with rusty pipes that are apparently difficult to get hold of - apparently this is available from Halfords?? Has anyone heard of this and if so what are your experiences, and anyone know the part number??? Is there anything 'special' about the mini fuel filter, or would a similar one suffice?? (I would have though filters for later cars would be better anyway as their engines would be more advanced and fuel 'fussy'??) I'd really appreciate your comments as I'm in this boat at the moment and looking for alternatives....

Quoting minispares;
"From the introduction of fuel injection systems in 1992, a fuel filter was mounted on the rear subframe. These should be replaced every 2 years or 24,000 miles, whichever is the sooner. GFE7059 covers all SPI models and MPI up to chassis number 169573 and has 20mm end outlet nuts . From chassis number 169574 part number GFE7057 is used--now also stamped GFE7119"

GFE7059.
GFE7057.

Thanks, those are threaded filters (already have one), so need to source the rusty pipe, which is the problem. Just curious as to those that may have changed to a different filter with hose connections to avoid this rust problem altogether..... Is there any reason to use the specified filter only - ie are these filters specific to the mini, and the mini should ONLY use these types of filter?? Is there a difference between filters which would cause problems? Would a filter with hosed connections from another injection car suffice??

Sorry for all the queries, just see this as quite a good alternative if it is feasible....

Took the bull by the horns and went ahead with a different filter. Got a WIX WF8034 filter - identical canister size as the spi mini one (so fits the chassis), but has a hose connection at each end rather than a screw thread - much easier! Got 2 x 1m 5/16" 8mm Petrol Guage hoses and suitable hose clips and did the job in about an hour. Took one hose out of the filter directly to the fuel pump in the tank so reduced number of connections as well. Car started first time and stayed running so I take that as it's happy. Hopefully this should help with further rust problems there as well. Photo enclosed (can't see the cannister as it's wrapped in my original rusty chassis - will replace this when I can). Hope this helps someone in my position...

I have exactly the same issue. one very rusty filter and no way to remove the very rusty ipes. I like the solution you have used. Have you had any issues with this filter?
Anyone else tried this?

Somerford Mini have just recently made the fuel lines for the filter available. The short sections of steel pipe and all the fittings that were previously not even listed in parts books (even Rover parts books) are now in stock there for both the early and late type filters.

I was in the end able to source the pipes, but the cost was higher and there are more joints with the original pipes, so I decided to stick with the rubber hose as it obviously won't rust, plus the filters are cheaper locally where I am, and it seems to work fine.......
