Ok then, if the lights are dimming and the radio goes off, then its sounds like the battery, if the starter is pulling enough juice to dim the lights but not start the car then its more than likely gonna be a battery problem.
It could also be an earth problem, do you have a set of jump leads?
Yup they are with the car sams got at work LOL

Try jumping it from that when she gets in i guess?
I know im a bit of a Dufus at times but lets see if im getting it right?
Red + lead to battery itself on car with good battery, and likewise Black- lead to battery too?
But you only clip the red lead to the battery in Boris right?
And the black to the boot lip or something?
Think i did it wrong last time we had to jumpstart her old pug (opps)
It did live to tell the tale though

Connect the red lead to the positive (+) teminal on both cars batteries
Connect the black lead to negative(-) lead on both cars batteries.
On Boris the (+) one will be the one disppearing under the rear seat.
Then the (-) will be the one screwed to the floor.
Its worth just checking that the battery terminals aren't loose, give em a wiggle baby, if they're loose, tighten em up.
Also have little look at the starter motor, have a look at the leads on that, are they loose?

If you're tightening up the positive terminal, make sure you don't short the battery out!!!
Make sure the spanner/screwdriver doesn't touch the (+) terminal and boris body at the same time!!

If the lights do dim and he doesn't turn over it would suggest the battery or battery cable & earths. If the solenoid wasn't connecting the starter it wouldn't put any strain on battery to dim the lights.
Clean all the contacts on the battery cabling, look for fraying, and check you have an earth strap in decent condition.
'n don't be too hard on the little fella, the brakes on all cars wear out sooner or later, Boris's will have been much cheaper to put right.

Sam Came home and we got the jump leads out and Hey Presto he burst into life

Thing is now we have a Dilemma wotz wrong does he have a Faulty Battery or a Faulty Alternator?
How do we get to the bottom of it without being ripped off?
Just Wanted to say a Bigg Thank You to Everybody who gave me advise as i was really upset earlier and a bit frantic to say the least

If you do put it across the battery terminals while someone revs it and see what the voltage readout is, should be around 13.5 Volts IIRC, either way if you can do this and let us know the results weshould be able to tell you weather Boris is charging correctly.

do you have or have access to a multimeter???

Hmmm well
Connect the red lead to the positive (+) teminal on both cars batteries
Connect the black lead to negative(-) lead on both cars batteries.
My jump leads say put postive to positive then connect the negative one to the charged battery and the to a engine mount (un painted surface) on the car with the flat battery

you should, you can get them fairly cheep and you can diagnose a whole host of problems with them.

Chances are its the battery, a sudden burst of cold weather will kill off a tired battery.
My local parts store has a battery tester and an alternator tester behind the counter, they will test them for free for you.
See if your local motor factors would do the same?
Failing that, as said before get your self a multimeter, maplins will do you a cheap easy to use thing and should be able to give you some advice.
Ps
Glad you got him going again!!!

if it works like that than the alternator is charging. if it remains on with the car switched on then the alternator is not charging

is the charge warning light working well? ie switching on red when car is off (ignition position II) and then turns off when started (maybe blip the throttle)
if it works like that than the alternator is charging. if it remains on with the car switched on then the alternator is not charging
Not always the case. The lamp will go off when it senses a charge coming off the alternator, be ot 12.2 v or 15 v, the alternator could just be kicking out enough to keep the car running but not to charge the battery, or it could e kicking out too much and may have fried the battery.
Although it is a good indication as to weather the alternator is working its not always correct.
