Hi,
Ive asked this question about MPI Engine and was told no.
But, ive been offered a cheapish SPI Engine and Box. Assuming that i use A+ Ancillaries, will this all fit and work fine? Or is it a totally different lump to the A and A+ ?

An Spi lump is fine its basically the same as the carb unit - has different flywheel and various other differences but none too onerous - the most irritating is the lack of hole for temp sender in the head (easily sorted with one in the thermostat cover though) - go for it and if you can get ECU, Control Unit & fobs from the donor too - flog them and make much of your money back....

Cheers,
The engine comes complete, so im hoping to drop it all straight in. I have an A Series Oselli Big Valve head plus a Weber 40 DCOE that i would like to bolt straight on, so that should sort out the Temp Sender problem & Fueling. Are there any other pitfalls that i should look out for?
What gearboxes are fitted as standard on the SPI's? are they 4 or 5 speed?

4 speed. no Minis were ever produced with a 5 speed as standard.

Ah right, thanks for that.
The seller has mentioned that the oil filter housing is missing (where is bolts to the block).
Will the one from an A Series fit, or does it have to be the A+ one?

I thought there was a special edition "Rover Cooper MPi 5" (or something like that) with a 5 speed JKD gearbox fitted?

I always thought it was an optional extra.

Nope. There was a Cooper Sport 5 but that was an aftermarket model modified by John Cooper Garages not a production line product. It was never a Rover option. We've been through this lots of times, lots of people think there were all sorts of options that never existed.
You will have to use a late A+ filter head from a "12A" (as in the engine number) type engine because the oil transfer pipe unions are different from earlier types. You can use an early head if you want but you'll have to get a special pipe with different fittings on each end. You will want to use a non-standard, braided oil transfer pipe instead because the standard one is sealed with olives that tend to fail spectacularly.
