Hello,

I've a got a 998cc 94' mini sprite, and i've got a problem. The oil pressure warning light has come on and i just wanted to know whether there were any common faults to fixing this problem, or if anyone could just help me out please.

Thanks

Does it appear to be pressure related, i.e. Does it only come on at low revs or when the engine has warmed up? An oil change may help, especially if you use engine flush. Also look at the pressure relief valve.

It could also just be a faulty pressure switch or electrical short if you're lucky.

It comes on as soon as the car turns over. Ok oil change, ok this may sound stupid but wheres the pressure relief valve,
Ok will check all this thanks for your help.

Hiya,

I had similar problem. The engine seemed fine when it was retired a while back, then when it was refitted it seemed to have good-ish oil pressure.
As it had sat around the garage for a while I drained the old oil, refilled with flush oil, ran it it for 10 minutes and drained it again; then changed the oil filter and refilled with Commer 20/50.
All seemed well (about 50PSI), but after a short run - about 7 miles - the pressure started dropping, then went to 0PSI on idle up to about 20PSI max. This then went to just about 0PSI after a further couple of miles.

As I had fitted an oil pressure guage as well as a new pressure switch, I could safely say that what I saw was not a fault in that area.

Checked the Pressure Release valve and spring assuming dirt had been trapped under the valve (under the 1 inch domed nut on the left side of the engine just to the left of the dizzy, below the solid oil pipe going to the oil filter housing), and couldn't see any problem.. still no pressure once the engine warmed up.

Finally replaced the oil pump and that seems to have been the problem - to start with, maybe the old oil was so dirty it shielded the fact the pump had gone U/S....

Old oil gets thinner the longer it's in the engine as it gets a real battering having to service both the engine and gearbox in an A-series engine. Changing it every 6000-8000 miles is best; a little less frequently if you use the more specialised oils such as those manufactured by Millers (up to about twice the price of the Duckhams or Commer 20/50's though).

Guessworks passed this to me on another post:-

True path of oil is...

Pickup from the sump (gearbox)
up the back of the block and into the pump ( which sucks from the sump, and pushes it on it's way )
past the oil pressure release valve, excess oil is dumped straight back into the gearbox.
from the oil pressure release valve is goes up the front offside of the block, past the oil pressure switch ( or take off for oil pressure gauge ) and into the feed pipe to the filter.
It goes into the outer side of the filter and then up the middle into the engines oil galleries, and on to the engine components and head. If the filter is blocked then the oil passes through a small bypass relief valve in the filter head straight into the oil galleries, unfiltered.
Eventually returning to the sump by gravity.
