I'm gonna ask an obvious question really simply just to check something. on a '96 cooper mpi what should the firing order be as you follow the leads around the dizzy cap. (aside, is it still a dizzy?)

As stated, 1-3-4-2 but remember that the direction of rotor rotation (and therefore firing order) is COUNTERCLOCKWISE, not clockwise. (This of course assumes that the MPI cars... which I'll never see... have a traditional dizzy in the block).

1-3-4-2 on all minis with dissy (1959-1997)

On all MPis (dissy-less)

1 and 4 fire at the same time

3 and 2 fire at the same time.

Do they fire on a wasted spark principle then?

Yes, that's why they have a twin coil wasted spark ignition pack. Basically connect 1 and 4 to each end of the same coil and the same for three and two. Doesn't matter which end of the coil is connected to which cylinder but it does matter which coil they are connected to. If it won't run use the other one!

They don't have a distributor.

my 2 stroke bike runs wasted spark... weird system for that. fires every 180 degrees and only has 2 cylinders!

I suspected that an MPI would be different... I had no idea that they had no dizzy. Too bad I won't get the chance to see one!

well I knew it was dissy-less as I've looked under the bonnet, didn't have a clue what it actually was though!

but anyways so as you follow the leads round, should they still be in a 1-3-4-2 order or...? should they be 1-4-3-2 I gues is the best way to put it, as its not a circle but a square I suppose?
