im trying to remove the old old bonnet stripes they must be as old as the car itself which is 1990.
they are all cracking etc . i have tried heating it up with a hair dryer and although it does sort of work, its taking ages and only coming off in ultra small bits.
is there a better way to get them off?

Petrol might dissolve it.

Not really, get them warm and peel them away slowly. You could use thinners to soften them, but this would likely end up softening the paint, which would make it likely that you'd mark it in the process of removing the decals. If you were painting the bonnet this wouldn't matter.

Heat guns work well, need to get them pretty hot though

I managed to get the decals off mine in one piece using a hair dryer, you do need to get it very hot. Mine is an 85 aswell so is even older aswell.

in current weather you will need a heat gun to slightly warm the vinyl so it won't crack every mm when removing it.
to get rid of the glue just rub it off with some tar and bug remover.

They wont, i use heat guns to take stickers off every day. Ive not melted any paint yet, and i work with some shockingly bad paint jobs.
