I am getting Minxy's windows tinted this week. The to rear quarters and rear screen ar going Limo Black and the front side and windscreen are a Light Smoke. I like the look plus it prevents the glass shattering into the car in the event of a crash/break in, repels sunlight and heat and also stops the little Pikey buggers having a gander at my sound system.

Does anybody with tinting find it draws more attention or less??

I have found from friends cars that it draws more attention from the police, plus raises the question of "why" the theiving scumbags

Also strictly speaking it is illegal to put anythign on the front 3 windows, and they can seize the car / make you remove the film on the side of the road!

Hence why all my install is stealthy

you may also find that having the fronts done will mean you can't see much when it is dark - i personally would never have the windscreen done :P, and they are coated to prevent them coming in on you in an accident :P

Before doing the front side or front windscreen I would check the law out first as 4 of my mates have been pulled and the police have carried a " tester " to see if the shade is too dark ! and have had to remove on the spot or leave the car......

To prevent theft... Get Unbreakable glass !! As mine got broke into by them simply bending the door back.

Also, in my mind, most people get tinted windows when they have something to hide, so making their car more of a target.

The front windows must let 70% of light through and the Light Smoke allows that amount, plus as I have no visors it takes alot of the glare out.

Also David, have you ever had your Mini broken into? I have and the glass shattered all over the inside. The Windscreen may not do this but side windows do and that is more of a concern to me. I am having the tinting done by a professional so they wouldn't use anything illegal for fear of repurcussions.

Courtney, have you ever tried tinting a windscreen or removing tint? Its bloody hard work and not something I want done again in a hurry. Its not a case of doing it regardless of if the Old Bill don't like it, my tint conforms with the Law but I am more interested in the security aspect of it.

I think it does look good in the back windows, as the bf had it in his cooper. The only thing is that sometimes with certain people it can look like you hiding something in the back of the car.
thats why i would be a lil worried about doing it to cherry, but each to there own :D

borrowed from 306 forum:

"As of January 1st 2004, new legislation was brought in that prohibits window tinting.

The Law:

You are not allowed to tint your windscreen or front windows AT ALL. Anything forward of the B pillar (middle of the car) MUST NOT be tinted in anyway. You are however still allowed to perform any level of tinting on your back windows.

If you've tinted you windows before January that does not mean that you are safe, if the police believe that your tint causes reduced visibility they can issue you with an order to have it removed.

Why was this law brought in?

The reason this law was introduced was that there was a serious accident between a motorbike and a heavily modified car with very dark tints. It was believed that the root cause of the accident was that the driver couldn't see well enough through his tinted windows."

clicky

I've peeled tint off before, you can still see the glue in the corners if you look at my windows and indeed it is not fun! As for stopping glass getting in, im sure it still will as a hammer to the window is going through, short of mesh i dont think theres much you can do!

Also Wilson (not having a go, i wouldn't dare!), the older windows weren't laminated and as such when break, the glass does go everywhere when they break, it's surprising how much of a mess broken glass makes as it just scatters everywhere!

I do agree though, it will attract police, "boy racers" etc and the like, as well as the thieving scum who will think theres something in there worth taking as Wilson has already said

To be honest I don't think the Old Bill would suspect a bright purple and blue Mini driven by some young blonde bird, but I may be wrong? They see me all the time, in fact some of them even give me a little smile when they see me :D

Wilson, before they brought that law in it was 70% of light is allowed. Mine windows allow more than that so I don't think they'd bother wasting their time.

Anyway, the topic was regardin security so lets get back to that shall we?

i know how far glass goes. I bought a Cat D Clio which had both N/S windows smashed int he accident - and 2 yers later it was still appearing under the front seats etc.

I'm not having a go in any way Jo so don't take it that way, just get the balance right between function and fashion lol, plus im sure you still want people to see it is you driving Minxy :D

People will see its still me since you can see through the windows.

Secondly, I only asked about security and safety, not the law. I have heard the 'law' a hundred times. Anyway, ill ask a Mod to clean this back up for me.
