first of all...hi everybody i'm new on here and new to mini...
just wanted to know if anybody can give me a tip..i had my mini already checked by a mechanic which said i had a petrol leak and apparently fixed it.
well..
the smell its not inside the car, when i drive with the window up, but if i get the window open the smell of petrol becomes quite overpowering...so it seams to be coming inn from outside if the engine its on.
sounds familiar to any of u/ur minis?
i'm kind of not bother by it now (..as its bloody freezing..), but i'd like to get it fixed by spring time..
also my boot really smell of petrol..is it common?
thanks in advance to anyone that can help or suggest something...and nice to meet u all :P

start the car and shine a torch down the back of the engine by the pump. i had a leak here a few weeks ago. also check the condition of the hoses and clips plus the vent pipe on the petrol tank in the boot.

there should be a pipe going from the top of your tank leading out the bottom of the boot, its a breather pipe, chances are its not there so you'll have to stick another one on!

Another check you could make is the petrol cap itself, my mini smelt really strong outside of petrol and that's where it was tracked down to as the seal had gone.

Id check your breather pipe in the boot, make sure its not come loose.

Did the mechanic tell you where the leak was? If it was carb overflow it may have soaked the sound proofing.
Alternatives are failed pump joint, carb overflowing still, split hose, (though you haven't said the car is having problems with power), fuel cap.

If it was fuel tank breather I'd expect the fumes all the time.

Get it fixed asap as the fumes aren't good for you! Plus if there's a petrol leak there's a significant fire risk!

Its because he said he said the boot smelt of petrol and it came in when he opened the window. Its somthing to check and cross off though.

the fixings have to be very tight and ive discovered that juiblee clips do not work very well, but if you get a consistant leak then you sometimes get a white crystal like disposit from where ever the leak is coming from

I had a leak from the sender unit on the tank in the boot. Its a bayonet type fitting with a rubber seal that had perished.

I bet it's the fuel tank vent pipe has come adrift from the fitting on the top of the fuel tank.

Refit it and make sure it's not kinked and is able to exit through the boot floor rubber grommet.

It runs through the hole with the grommet (behind the fuel tank, the other hole with no grommet is for the fuel hose): -
