right, Alec came round to help with the engine but also did help with some other bits, so this is where it stands now:

hand brake is working
indicator is working
engine is runnig more smoothly

outstanding

seat brackets
spacer for one rear wheel
small oil leak

small steps but mostly in the right direction ... so I wirebrushed both spacers and gave them a quick coat of silver paint then put them onto the car. Next I put the back wheels back on and lowered the car back to the ground only to then put the front onto axle stands.

The indicator is now mounted back where it should be, the air filter is back on the carbs and I managed to get the screw out that might be the cause of the oil leak ... not looking good though. Since I didn't have a replacement I left it out so I can think about what to do with it.

I then attached both bottom engine steadies to the engine, though not to the subframe yet as I was suffering from a lack of time and the correct drill bit. The left one (below the clutch) was a bit odd though. It should be secured with three nuts but would only fit onto two of them. The third one, the highest one of the three just didn't fit. For the time being I used just the two nuts and left the third where it was, which was no problem. Again, will have to think about it.

yes, thought the steering wheel is a different one now and the glass isn't really green tinted

Hehehe. Thought so, I went out to do an interview (that never got published) with the chap you've brought it off for one of the mags after he'd finished the resto work... it was a beautiful little thing. The twin carbs gave him fits to set up :tumble:

So, on Saturday Adam came round to weld in some patches for the seat brackets to attach to. We cut square bits of metal, drilled holes for the brackets and then welded the nuts to the metal. He then drilled out the holes in the cross member and welded the new squares onto it.

He also put a small weld over the bit where the handbrake attaches to the cross member as that had come off.

I then put some primer of the new welds but will probably treat the whole floor to some wire brushing and Hammerite in the near future.

So, all that needs doing now is a new screw put into the timing chain cover and then I will try for an MOT probably (if they have a slot left) next Monday as I have that day off.

Thanks to Giacomo from www.redandwhite.it I now also know what make the steering wheel is that I have been using since I first bought it for my first Mini.

It's made by a company called OBA and is the model cisa, which is a reference to Footstep of the Cisa (in italian: Passo della Cisa), famous footstep among Italian region Toscana and Emilia Romagna, once centre of race from place Poggio Berceto to Passo della Cisa. The Passo della Cisa is here where the dotted line crosses the yellow road.

OBA are still making steering wheels for cars and boats and also some other accessories.

so I went to the DVLA today with the V5, the invoice from MiniSpeed for the work to bore the new engine from 1275 to 1293, the DVLA letter acknowledging that I had scrapped the Metro and a hand written note that I had done the transplant myself. My aim: to get the new engine no and size into the V5.

A compliment to the DVLA Borehamwood, very nice staff, very helpful and very confident that it should be no problem. So, we'll see ...

Oh dear, as above poor old Cecil.

Have you left him with the garage to be fixed? Hope he passes soon, he is absolutely gorgeous!
