Put this in General Tech & Probs but was told to post here as well :(

Model: Cooper 1.3i
Year:1995
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
Hey,
I finally got fed up with the exhaust falling off at the Y section whenever I went over a rough patch of road or thought about going over a speedbump and replaced the whole system.

Took off the manifold and replaced the old one that was dud, and put the new system on. At first I forgot to put the Lambda sensor back on, started the car and after about 10 mins at idle the Centre branch of the manifold started glowing bright red!! Realised my error, decided the sensor had no where near enough cable to reach so set about extending it.
Initially after I refitted the sensor the mini wouldn't idle properly, it would rev high, then rev low, switching about every second or so and eventually stall. I turned it off, had a check around the injectors everything seemed ok so re started it and it idled fine until.... 5 minutes later I could smell that smell you get after welding so popped the bonnet and true enough the centre branch was glowing again. This time though it was very bright, more orange/yellow than red, much longer and I'm pretty sure the thing would have gone white hot.

Someone tell me what I've managed to screw up in my attempt to replace my exhaust. I've ordered a new Lambda sensor tonight but not even sure if it is that or if it's something I've done to the injector when I had to take that off to get the new Exhaust manifold in.

Specialist Components Stainless Manifold.
De-Cat pipe
Had to leave the old back box on, RC40 side exit exhaust.
K&N cone filter.
Oil cooler.

I'll check the state of the exhaust for any blocks but Manifold, Cat link pipe and De-Cat pipe are all new and I checked for blockages before I put them on. I had to reuse my old side exit exhaust which may have a block in it but I can't see it being that.

The only part that gets visually hot is the centre branch of the LCB.

Hmmm.. engine temp seemed ok, only idled for 10 mins tops though.

I don't have anything that can take it's temperature, and I decided poking it with my finger was a bad idea so no clue how hot it actually is. What temp does stainless steel have to be at to glow red/orange?

2 Vacuum hoses and a new Lambda sensor later and she's running fine again. Guess I must have torn the 2 Hoses that attach at the rear of the manifold because both where badly split on the rubber connectors.

Thanks for the help peeps.
