Hiya. How do people who convert later cars and later rear lights to MKI & II styling get around the reverse light issue. I rather fancy an MKII boot and rear light conversion on my 93 Cooper, but dont know where to wire my reversing lights too. I am right in thinking its the reverse lights they dont have? :) I was thinking about using a Lucas lamp as a reverse light but dont really want one. Is this the only way?

PS. Sorry if its been covered already. :(

You would have to put a seperate lamp on. Early cars often put a rear faciing spot light on the boot lid. I am not sure if a reverse light is a legal requirement (i suspect not) and it is certainly not an MOT requirement, however you must have a rear guard fog light on a vehicle this age. Matching lamps are available with red & clear lenses, the type which hang under the rear bumper. This may be your best bet and you can use the existing wiring from your original back lights to connect them up.

Regarding the MOT, if it has a reverse light then it must work.

I've been testing cars for 20 years and I didn't know this !!! Look here in the lighting section, I can't find a word about reverse lights and if it isn't in the manual it's not testable.

I suppose its probably important to have a reverse light anyway, so i'll have to sort something out. 'Mk1 leg' im loving what you've done, where did you purchase the two lighting units from :- I really wanted MK1 rear lights as my front end looks like an MK1 but i've been reading up on the plate conversion and apparently they're rock solid to get looking right. So I was going to settle on MKII just because they're easier to fit, oh and my mate said that MKI dont go with sport pack arches, anyone agree?

I've never ever had a reversing light tested... and I've done the MK2 conversion on both my cars

Got a rear facing spot on both, works fine and it's just wired into the old loom... rather than a manual switch =]

Your better of saving up for a gen mk1 rear panel now available from BMH..............£200...as the plates are not quite rite for app........ :mmkay:.......and the wipac lights and I had the units espscially made cost me £150.........

Regarding fitting mk1 rear lights.... has anyone ever thought of fibreglass conversion plates bonded in rather than metal plates welded in?? Just an idea....

If you do have one fitted they can't test it either, they are not allowed to do anything that is not on the test.

yup as said, you dont have to have one. Does get annoying when pulling out of car parking spaces, or trying to parrallel park when there is someone on your bumper.

I sometimes whack the hazards on as some people can't work out the car is going backwards.
