MiniMan5, I have a HF38 sitting in the garage collecting dust. You can have that for a tenner plus postage, then you can spend your money on a rebuild for that, you will need to change the needle as you would on the twins though. You get them from burlen (www.burlen.co.uk)... also would not bother putting twin 1.1/4's on a 998, spend the money on an HIF38 instead )
I've just been and dug it out. The insulating spacer is missing, but the shield is there as well as the elbow for the standard air cleaner. This carb is of the throttle edge depression type. Not going to get too technical here but there are different types of carb :saywhat: . This carb came off a 1994 1275 and was replaced with a HF44 with manifold depression resulting too much vac advance on ignition and was totaly removed when tuned on the rollers.
So buy the spacer with a take off point and you'll have either or. You can check and see which you've got when you get the thing off your car.
Not complicated honest

Dude I had a 38 on the 1275 and was good for 70bhp before it started to run out of puff, thats why I fitted the 44 which in the right circumstances is good for 100 before it starts to run out of puff. Twins have a throttle area of 2 1/2 inches but the single 38 has a trottle area of 1 3/4 inches and the 44 area of 2 1/3 inches. The latest 52mm throttle body for the Twin point injection has a throttle area of 3 1/3 inches, which is good for silly power figures. The twins and also the HIF44, would drown a 998 engine with air at full throttle which the engine can't consume, resulting in excessive and unneccisary fuel consumption.why would a HIF 38 be better than twins?
Now you most probably have a HS4 which has the same throttle area as the HIF38, the difference now being that the HIF is a far superior design resulting in less leak potential and better fuel consumption, its a more accurate metering device giving better emission results( when set up correctly)
Its not the throttle diameter or how many that counts, its the throttle area :smartass:
Take the easy option and keep the HS4, rebuild that and put what you saved towards a roller tune

There should be a metal tag that is attatched to one of the dashpot screws. Use the number and enter it into the relevant search. this will tell you the spec of the carb you have, though it may tell you what needle is in it remember that this still might not be correct.yea your point being? there as good as a webber once set up. i wouldnt moan at stripping them once every 6 months of so as its still cheaper than a webber and more fuel efficint

Bugger, that didn't work. Use the drop down menu in section three and find the number MAC 10031, highlight it and hit the search button.
